DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH REID and ELIZABETH HAMPTON

There are many branches of the REID and WEST families in North America. This specific branch, covers the descendants of JOSEPH REID and his wife, ELIZABETH HAMPTON. Joseph Reid was the son of John Reid and Margaret Mc Cullock of Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. He emigrated to America in 1716 landing at Newport News, VA. He settled in the area known as Truro Parish in Stafford Co., VA. He and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth Hampton of Truro Parish, Fairfax Co., VA, raised six children: Absolom who married Sarah Simpson; Jane who married Joseph Carr; Sarah who married William Brown; John who married Ann - ; Elizabeth "Eliza" who married Joel (Jacob) Butler; and Ann who married Jesse Harris (Hargus). Absolom Reid and Sarah Simpson's family are well documented whereas minimal information is available for the other children and their descendants. This series of books covers Absolom Reid and Sarah Simpson and their eight children. Their son, Joab Reid who married Nancy West, daughter of Thomas West and Sarah Trammell, had six children, and left many descendants. The families of Reid, Hampton, Simpson, and West migrated from Fairfax Co., VA traveling down the Ohio River into the District of Kentucky. They migrated to Kentucky Co., VA, which later became the State of Kentucky. They resided in Bourbon Co., KY where several children married. This area was later reorganized and a portion named Mason Co., KY. About 1795, the families migrated across the Ohio River near Limestone (Maysville), KY to the area known then as the Northwest Territory. This area became the State of Ohio in 1803. The REID and WEST families settled in Adams Co., OH. As the population grew, boundaries changed. The REID and WEST families were instrumental in establishing and settling many of the early counties in Ohio; namely, Adams, Brown and Clermont. Some branches of the family have chosen to spell the name as REED. Although many REID and WEST families and their descendants remained in OH, many branches migrated further west to areas which later became known as the states of IN, IL, MO, WI, NE, KS, IA, CO, TX, OK, OR and WA. Joab Reid's daughter, Margaret Reid and her husband, Charles Warren and their descendants settled in Clay Co., MO where many branches of the family still reside.

Donal S. WEST, a descendant of Robert and Henrietta Fairfax WEST, has spent years researching various branches of the REID/WEST families. He has traveled all over the United States to grave sites, court houses, libraries and archives, and has corresponded with hundreds of REID/WEST families. This book is one of a series that Donal has researched and published. Donal has either seen the birth or death records, gravestones, marriage records, etc. or has seen primary evidence from the respective families. Donal's research was supplemented by information provided by family members. Documentation for births, deaths, marriages, census, probate records, etc. was added, when available, by Mrs. Lola E. Lindsey during follow up research in original court records or from members of families.

Lola EDWARDS Lindsey, is a descendant of John WEST Sr. and his wife, Eleanor Laws EDWARDS, through Sarah EDWARDS and Edwards WEST Sr.'s daughter, LETITIA WEST. John West Sr.'s sister was Nancy West who married Joab Reid. Mrs. Lindsey produced this six volume series of the descendants of JOSEPH REID and his wife, ELIZABETH, using ROOTS III. The Volumes are available at the Allen County Library, Genealogy Department, Fort Wayne, IN. Copies will be available in other genealogical research libraries.
