Charles Co, Maryland Families
Scotts of Bedford Co, VA
We have been following a lead on Thomas and Anne's families received from Linda & Buddy Grubbs, descendants of Capt. George SCOTT of Campbell Co, Kentucky. Capt. George SCOTT is the son of William SCOTT (ca 17251794) and Lucretia JAMES (ca 1730ca 1801) of Bedford Co, Virginia, and he married 2nd, Theodocia DENT 17 Feb. 1799 in Bedford Co. William and Lucretia had a son named Thomas among those mentioned in William's will dated 1793, and in the Marriage Bonds of Bedford Co, the following is recorded:
Oct. 2, 1790 Thomas SCOTT & Anne COOKSEY; Lemester COOKSEY, Surety; Married by John Ayers, Oct. 14, 1790.
We are in contact with researchers of the COOKSEY, SCOTT and DENT families of Bedford and Amherst Counties, and hope to have more info on them soon.
Other Leads
Aside from the Bedford Co lead, what we know of Thomas and Anne's origins is that Thomas' place of birth was given as Virginia in the 1850 census in Brown Co, Ohio. He was enumerated with son, Thomas SCOTT Jr., and his age at that time was stated as 88, which would place his time of birth at 1762. However, his tombstone, which was recently discovered by cousin Jim Innis, places his year of birth at 1767.
The birthplace of Theodosia Scott KENDALL, daughter of Thomas and Anne, was given in the censuses of 1850 and 1860 in Brown Co as Virginia. The inscription on her tombstone says died 11 July 1875, aged 81 years, which makes her date of birth about 1794. Her brother, Thomas Jr., was born about 7 Jan 1800, figuring from his tombstone, and his birthplace was given as Kentucky in the 1850 and 1860 census of Brown Co.
From these we can estimate that the family was in Virginia until at least 1794, and in Kentucky by Jan 1800.
Cooksey Update: August 2000
While visiting my aunt this summer, we found a couple of items that may have some impact on the Thomas Scott and Anne Cooksey lead:
E.J. Cooksey
First, we found a family photo c1920 that included my mother and aunts, their aunt and grandparents, a cousin and a young man identified as "E. J. Cooksie". All others in the photo, with the exception of grandfather David Shreve, are descendants of Thomas and Ann Scott, so we suspect that E.J. Cooksey is a relative and are trying to find out more about him.
Cooksey Correspondance
Second, my aunt recalled that her mother Birdie Shreve Marsh, a 2g granddaughter of Thomas and Anne Scott, corresponded over the years with a relative that my aunt knew only as "Cooksey". She wasn't sure exactly where Cooksey lived, she seemed to recall Cedar Rapids, or perhaps Grand Rapids, but she was certain that Cooksey was a relative.
Cooksey Links
Since we started researching the Scott-Cooksey marriage record, we have received help from quite a few Cooksey researchers, particulary Leon Wilde and Tim Thomas, and send our thanks to them. We have also found a few Cooksey links which are included below. above, so we are including the links below. Our thanks to Leon Wilde and Tim Thomas for help with our Cooksey research.
