"Peter Godwin, son of Nahor Godwin and Frances Williams, was born in Dorchester Co, MD, 1771. After the death of his parents in Kent Co., DE, he went to Fincastle, VA.,along with two of his brothers. This was probably some time after 1795. On August 6, 1800, he married Mary Mefford in Botetourt Co, VA. She was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Mefford."

"In 1804, he made a Trust Deed in Botetourt Co., VA. selling all his household goods and his carpenter tools. In 1810, he had left Botetourt Co., VA. and moved to Granger Co., Tn. By this time he had six children. Parrott Godwin, born November 30, 1811, was shown in the 1850 Granger Co. Census as being born in Tennessee. He was the 7th child. The first six children are listed as being born in Virginia."

"According to the 1830 Granger Co. Census, Peter Godwin lived next door to Abraham McConnell. Abraham had married Mahala Godwin, the oldest daughter of Peter and Mary."

"If Peter Godwin owned any property either in Virginia of Tennessee, no record was found. In the McConnell family cemetery, located five miles east of Rutledge, TN. on Lee Highway, a simple little headstone was found inscribed:

Peter Godwin died Febuary 1836, age 65 years.

Beside it stood another stone inscribed:

Mary, wife of Peter Godwin, died Febuary 1841, age 65 years."
