John Riggs, Jeremiah Riggs, Nathan Masters - the said John and Jeremiah in right of their wives, and the said Nathan in his own right became entitled on the death of Mary Mills, formerly Mary Masters, mother of the wives of John and Jeremiah and of Nathan - to one fifth each of a negro woman named Mary and her children, three of which were born before the death of Mary Mills, and one since, in possession of George Mefford and Thomas McGinnis both of whom in right of their wives claim also one fifth of the said negroes.
Whereas, George Mefford, willing to purchase claim of John Riggs, Jeremiah Riggs and Nathan Masters so they (by their attny William Riggs) convey to George Mefford all their rights in the negroes for $450.00

    "MILLS, Thomas, S33101, VA Line, appl 16 Apr 1833 Lawrence Co IL aged 71, sol had enl 1st on Wheeling Creek in VA & later moved to Red Stone Fort now called Brownsville PA & also enl there in 1779 & after the Rev he returned to Fort Wheeling VA for 5 yrs then moved to Fayette Co KY for 1 yr then moved to Mason Co KY for 30 yrs then to Lawrence Co IL, sol referred to Thomas Collins & Thomas Fyffe."

"The following were among the first settlers of what is now Marshall county: Nathan Masters settled on what is known as Roberts' ridge, in 1777. John Riggs and James Riggs, settled the same year a short distance from Nathan Masters." p361

"Clay District Early Settlers: Probably Nathan Masters was as early a settler in this district as any. It is claimed he came out early in 1777. The same year came John and James Riggs, and James Freeman. Benjamin Fish settled in 1790. The Bakers, McLains and Roberts were also among the earliest settlers." p410

1810 Census, Ohio County, Virginia shows three Masters households, with Nathan Masters and Lot Masters on page 23, and Henry Masters on page 8:

Nathan Masters and wife, over 45 years, 1 male and 2 females 16-26, 2 females 10-16, and 1 male under 10;

Lot Masters and wife, 16-26 years, and 2 males under 10.

Henry Masters and wife, over 45 years, 1 male and 1 female 10-16, and 3 females under 10;

1820 U.S. Census Index for Virginia shows only one Masters household in Ohio County:
Nathan Masters, page 21. The same index shows a household in Harrison Co headed by David Masters, and one in Monongalia Co headed by William Masters.

1830 U.S. Census Index for Virginia shows only one Masters household in Ohio County:
Cloe Masters, page 229. Is she Nathan's widow?

1840 U.S. Census Index for Virginia shows one Masters household in Ohio County, William Masters, page 27.
Also shown is one Masters household in Marshall Co headed by Adock B. Masters, aged 50-60, page 296, (other records show a Zadock Masters in Marshall Co); And one household in Harrison Co headed by:
Priscilla Masters, page 39.

Keep in mind that Ohio Co was the parent county for both Marshall and Harrison and that Monongalia was the other parent county for Harrison.
