Levines Marsh was a glass engraver, as were many other members of his family, during a time when St. Helens grew enormously, the Industrial Revolution -- a time when the manufacture of glass became one of the key industries in the town. Levines father, also named James Marsh (b. 1816), operated a tailor and draper shop in St. Helens, as had his father, John Marsh, (b. 1785). My research has led me back to Peter Marsh, b. 1765. Unfortunately, all I know of Peter's parentage is that his mother's name was Mary Marsh.

Besides tailors, glass tradesmen and labourers, the St. Helens branches of the Marsh family counted among them beer sellers and brewers, an attorney at law, a hosier, the founder of an alkali production company, a superintendent at the well known Pilkingtons glass factory, and a publican.
