| Children named in Elizabeth’s Will Three sons were named and there appears to be three daughters who married Slade, Lane and Robbins, though none were named directly and can only be inferred from the names of the grandchildren. Sons: Samuel and James named directly; Joshua's children named as grandchildren. James Hodgkins - our direct ancestor's will proved 1828 in Brown Co, Ohio named wife Hannah and nine children named below. Samuel Hodgkins - served in the rev war from Harford Co, Maryland; married twice with two known children: Elizabeth Burgett (see below) from first marriage, wife's name unknown, and Hannah Hodgkins, from second marriage to Lydia Wright, was not born until 1832. Joshua Hodgkins - three children named in the will: son James, daughter Nancy and step-daughter Margary, although Joshua himself was not named as an heir and perhaps already deceased; there is a Joshua Hodkins enumerated in the 1790 census in Harford Co, MD and a Joshua Hodshins enumerated in Fawn Twp, York Co, PA, a township which borders Harford county. Is either of these Elizabeth's son? Anyone have further information on Joshua? Daughters: Elizabeth's daughters named indirectly and may have predeceased her. Hannah Hodgkins - married Samuel Lane (from bible record of Valentine Burgett and Mary Lane), see children below Susannah Hodgkins - married Obadiah Robbins, son of Vincent Robbins and Ann Kitchen. Mary Hodgkins - married Ezekiel Slade Jr., son of Ezekiel Slade (1730-1802) and Ann Whitaker (see Wally Garchow's website and Christos Christou Jr.'s website for more on the Slade family). Ezekiel Slade Jr. and Mary Hodgkins were married 28 Jan 1783 in Baltimore Co, MD; Source: Maryland Marriages 1634-1777, Robert Barnes. [Note: Is Ezekiel Slade Jr. above the same person whose will was proved in Harrison Co, KY in 1807? That will names wife Sarah Slade. Was Ezekiel Slade Jr. married more than once?] |
| Grandchildren named in Elizabeth’s Will By the count below, Elizabeth left legacies to 28 grandchildren. Twenty of those were named individually in her will plus eight children of James Hodgkins who were alive in 1814. Jesse H. Hodgkins, youngest son of James was born after Elizabeth's death. Names are in order of appearance and spelled as in the will.
